Reformation Day: 500th Anniversary
Happy Reformation Day!
They walk in the darkness, in a Dark Land, on paths long and crooked and oh so slippery. Stumbling. Always stumbling. Over what? They don’t know. They can’t see it. The darkness, it’s too thick. It blinds them, but they don’t want to look down anyway. They want to continue; and so they do, stumbling, staggering, groping in the dark.
The story of how English Bibles came into existence is fascinating. It is a story of hard work, tremendous sacrifice, faith, and even politics. What took place centuries ago not only deeply affected the course of the Reformation; it also had and still has eternal implications for many.
This particular story is important to know. The Reformation happened for a reason, well many reasons actually. It had a profound impact on individual lives and countries in Europe, and was a true turning point in church and world history. I encourage you to look into it if you haven’t already.
There is a treasure in the church that I hope you have discovered and are enjoying. I am referring to a large collection of writings by Christian men who no longer walk amongst us. While they were under the sun, they put pen to paper or quill to parchment and produced a body of work that has enriched many Christian lives. I doubt we will ever see the bottom.
My first glimpse of the treasure came when my husband and I discovered that we had a sizable gap in our knowledge about church history, namely the period of the Reformation. Unable to live with that black hole and filled with curiosity, we began to gather and devour relevant material. […]
With 66 books, 1,189 chapters, and 31,102 verses¹, the Bible is a considerable read. I have seen word counts of approximately 780,000.² War and Peace “only” has 561, 304 words!³ Have you read The Hobbit and the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy? Combined they are only 576,459 words.³ The Bible exceeds this by over 200,000 words! The Bible is a thick book, but it is wonderful. It contains words of eternal life and the greatest story ever told.
Since the Bible is so big, it is helpful to have resources that summarize things for us. […]
Today I took down the “Coming Soon” sign on my English Bible Quest page. I’m excited that it is ready! Beginning in the fourth century and ending in modern times, the quest highlights some of the important people and events that played a part in the process of God’s word becoming available to English speaking people in their native language.
